In the pressure-cooker, trend-a-minute world that is New York, Angela Cosmai stands out as a singular figure. A hair colorist-contrarian, she is an outspoken pragmatist who avoids any season's trends. Her signature is subtly nuanced, natural-looking color that never strays far from her clients' original tones. Those who come to her for dramatic change simply won't get it. "There are too many chemicals and too much maintenance involved," says Cosmai, whose continual concern is the health of the hair.
Practicing a "less is more" philosophy, Cosmai often custom-mixes her own long-lasting, non-peroxide formulas. She whips up lustrous, non-drying color glosses unlike anyone else's and applies highlights practically to the roots. Her forte is finding the believable, perfect tint. The beauty industry cites Cosmai as a color corrector, but those who know her work beyond its reputation regard her as something more—an artist with tints.
Working at both Pierre Michel Salon in NYC and the Angela Cosmai Salon in Stamford, CT, Cosmai has an international cadre of clients and celebrities. With private clients in London, Paris, Los Angeles, Dallas and a satellite salon in Palm Beach, Florida, Cosmai services men as well as women. Some have read about her in Vogue, Allure, and Glamour magazine. Others come by way of recommendation from fellow colorists, often to mend a "too-platinum" tint that's turned to straw.
All her life, Angela has been tangled up in hair. Her mother ran "Funny Girl" in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn and from the day she was old enough to reach the sink, she has been tending to hair. In her early twenties, she got a job as Robert Renn's right hand (one of New York's superstar colorists). Angela worked along side Renn for seven years. When Renn passed in 1985, he left his client list to Cosmai. On her own, Angela opened and operated a Salon for over 17 years.
Over the years, Cosmai's clients repeatedly asked her to recommend home products to help maintain their color but nothing out there met her specifications. So, with considerable "clinical" experience already behind her, she created the Angela Cosmai Color Protective Hair Care System. Unique, wonderfully mild, cruelty-free products, rich in natural botanicals. Not only do Cosmai's color clients swear by the shampoos, conditioners, sprays, styling gel and amazing hair masque, but so do women who have never tinted their hair but still seek to give it every benefit possible.
